Last-Minute DIY Pet Gifts! – Part 3 of Pet Holiday Series

Pets are members of the family too! And they deserve lots of Christmas gifts for putting up with us and loving us no matter what. But…then they don’t even use their brand-new squeaky toy or gourmet treats. They would much rather chew on your socks and eat your dropped turkey sandwich. And don’t get me started on the cat. She’d rather sit in the box that the gift came in than actually use the gift itself!

Sooo…why spend money when you can give your pet something they’ll like more, with things from around the house? Here are some quick gifts you can make for your furry friends!

And if you’re here because you are wondering if you should get the neighbor’s dog a gift, these are super easy and need few materials.

Squishy Oobleck Stress Toys Craft

Here is a quick craft that is great for kids – Ooey Gooey Oobleck Stress toys! They require very few materials, and are perfect for home learning during quarantine, especially at the end of such a stressful year. These are super fun to make, but also super messy. Be sure to protect the surface where you will be working. Use good quality balloons too – you don’t want these to pop on your sofa or computer.

  • Balloons
  • Cornstarch
  • Water
  • Water bottle
  • Bowl
  • Balloon pump (optional)
  1. Make ooblek. Combine 2 cups cornstarch with 1 cup water in a bowl. You can adjust this ratio if you prefer a gooey-er ooblek.
  2. Pour ooblek into a water bottle with a narrow top, preferably a plastic water bottle.
  3. Blow up a balloon, by mouth or with a balloon pump.
  4. Stretch the mouth of the balloon over the top of the water bottle. Flip the water bottle upside down so the oobleck flows into the balloon.
  5. When the balloon has an inch or two of ooblek, flip the water bottle and remove the balloon.
  6. Allow the air out of the balloon and tie.
  7. Rinse the ooblek off the outside, let dry, and enjoy!

Chicken Bandannas! (yes, really! they’re adorable!)

Bandannas are just awesome. They have so many uses, and there are so many different colors and patterns to choose from! So why shouldn’t our chickens get to enjoy the bandanna-ness? Here is the solution: A 10 minute bandanna craft for chickens!

**It is dangerous to let your chickens wear bandannas unsupervised, because they can get caught on things and potentially injure the bird. However, these bandannas are perfect for a photo op!**

(Check out my article on dogs and bandannas!)

I’m not great at sewing, but these are super easy! I used them to quickly identify two of my Silkies for a project I was working on.

Materials:

12 inch square of fabric

1 fabric snap

Thread and needle

Hot glue/regular glue

  1. Hem 2 sides of the fabric, 3/4 of an inch in

2. With the patterned side down, fold the side that isn’t hemmed to make a triangle.

3. Roll over the top of the triangle until it is the right size for your chicken. You can always adjust this later.

4. Glue on the fabric snaps. One will be on the outside of the collar, one on the inside. Before you glue, double-check that they will fasten correctly.

5. Make sure the glue dries completely before putting it on your chicken. It should fit loosely.
