Rainbow Chickens? The many colors of silkie bantams.

Have you ever heard of a blue chicken? What about a cuckoo-colored one? A chocolate chicken? Well, these are all colors of silkie chickens. There are white, red, lavender, black, gray, splash, buff and partridge silkies, too (and probably more colors in the works).

Let’s take a look at some of these awesome birds.

I’m also looking to get a few more silkies to add to my flock, and I can’t decide on the color! What’s your favorite? Let me know in the comments!

Meet the Chickens

We have been keeping chickens for almost 2 years. Originally, we had Black Stars and Easter Eggers, but we now have 5 white Silkie bantams. Silkies are often described as the “teddy bears” of the chicken world. I would have to agree! They are very cute and sweet, and don’t mind being picked up. Also, we get awesome mini eggs, since bantams lay smaller eggs than the “standard chicken” eggs you find at the grocery store.

The Chickens

Fancy Pants – Fancy is the boss of the coop – the head hen. She can be very sassy and hates being dirty. She goes broody a lot, too.

Phil – Phil was named Phil because we originally thought she was a he! Phil is the sweetest out of all our chickens. She likes attention, and will follow me around. I can always tell which one she is – her head is topped with an enormous poof of fluffy white feathers that always gets muddy when it rains.

Pumpkin, Sweet Pea, and Olive – These are the rest of the girls – all very sweet and great layers.

I’m thinking of getting a few more bantams this spring, because we have a large coop and run.

Do you have chickens? What breed? Feel free to tell me all about them in the comments below!
